The character "Dracula" was actually inspired by a real-life person named Vlad III (or Vlad the Impaler). According to an article in livescience.com, he was a Prince of Romania known to have a penchant for brutally punishing his enemies. Whether you committed a petty crime or a felony, the punishment you'd receive under his rule is impalement. It was a definite way of terrorizing his enemies. That was only one of the many cruelties Vlad has committed documented in historical texts.
